 Albert SHAFER
b. September 28 1858 in (Genesee?) New York The next year, Albert broke up five acres of land north of Garretson, SD, to homestead it, but someone else got to the land office first, to claim the land. So he went back to Valley Springs, about one and a half miles south and a half mile west, and broke up five acres of land there. This time, he heard that someone was planning to beat him to the claim, so he walked all night to the land office in Sioux Falls, so he would be there when it opened for the day. After applying to homestead the land, he met the others just arriving to claim his land. A few years later, the Sjurson family moved to the area and Albert met Nellie Sjurson. "And the rest is history...."

b. April 11 1863 in Madison, WI Nellie's father, Nils Sjurson, served in the Civil War. But when it was time for her to be born, he left his unit and walked back to Wisconsin in time to personally name her. In the early 1870's, Nellie and her parents packed their belongings into a covered wagon and left Wisconsin to settle awhile in Decorah, IA. Albert's sister, Ida Viola SHAFER, born April 25 (exact year unknown), was a teacher in the Valley Springs area. According to an article about Elmer Shafer by Mrs. James Medendorp, "before the first school was built where the Reformed Church now stands, (Ida) went from home to home, teaching the children." Albert also had two brothers, Dell (born July 28 1860) and Delmont (born April 2 1865) Shafer, and a second sister, Helen Gertrude Shafer, born November 18 1879. Albert and Nellie married on November 4 1881 in Valley Springs, SD. After a honeymoon trip by train to Sioux Falls (they stayed at the Cataract Hotel), they set up housekeeping back in Valley Springs.

Aunt Hazel Remembers....
When Elaine Shafer visited Aunt Hazel in March, 2001, Hazel talked about growing up in her childhood home. It was a very small house, only 5 rooms but when the weather got warm enough they would set up a big tent outside and put 4 sets of bunkbeds in there and that was where the boys slept.
