Aaron Nelson Shafer was born in Minnehaha County just east of Valley Springs Dec. 7, 1891 to Albertus and Nelcina Shafer. Dr. George Bliss was the attending physician.
He graduated from Valley Springs High School in 1907, later attending Ward Academy in Western S.D. at Academy, South Dakota.
Aaron taught school before he became one of the early businessmen of Sioux Falls.
He married Orpha Nellie Wroe June 28, 1914 at Valley Springs. He and his wife were happy in the Wahoo Lodge Nursery business, the fine Jersey Dairy and farm. They raised their three children there.
In later years, Aaron and Nellie established a beautiful home, farm and the Three Rivers Shafer Nursery east of Sioux Falls in the Brandon area.
Aaron was active and enjoyed his associations in various organizations: the Knights of Pythias, Civic Fine Arts Assoc., Minnehaha Historical Society, Segrams Rock Dust, American Hersey Cattlemans Assoc., Sokata Hybrid Seed, Inc., International Association of Machinist, American Horticultural Assoc., Sons and Daughters of the Soddies, Sioux Falls Camera Club and Bardic Round Table.
He was loyal and patriotic; traveling to all 50 of the United States.
Things of beauty in the art world, in nature, and horticulture filled his life.
Included in his survivors are his wife, Orpha; a son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Eva Shafer of Sioux Falls, another son and daughter-in-law, Elden and Bernice Shafer, Sr. of San Jose, Calif., 1 daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Cliff Kraemer of Arlington, Texas; 7 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren; 2 brothers, Elmer Shafer of Valley Springs and Harold Shafer of Sioux Falls; 3 sisters, Mrs. Hazel Ronning of Dell Rapids, Mrs. Edna Herison of Sioux Falls, and Mrs. Josephine Coulter of Pine River, Minnesota.
